From Within

Hand dyed and handwoven by Nicki Rathert

From Within features a black 12/2 Supima and hand dyed 8/2 Tencel warp, individually alternating across the width of the warp. The dye work moves from reds, to deep pinks, oranges, and yellows throughout the length of the wrap, as lava flows down a mountainside. The weft is hand dyed lace weight silk/linen, which lends strength and texture to the piece. The flecks of grey in the predominately black weft capture the essence of obsidian. The weave structure is an 8-shaft echo weave, designed by Bonnie Inouye. I have always been fascinated by the way drafting and colorwork can come together to create the illusion of curves out of the straight lines of warp and weft fibers, and a lava flow was a perfect opportunity to showcase this structure. From Within is medium-thin in hand, with plenty of drape and shine. It has plenty of diagonal stretch, and a lovely glide-to-grip ratio. The Tencel-supima warp makes easy work of wrapping, and the linen-silk weft locks your wrap job in place
